Your BMW is a finely-tuned machine, requiring regular maintenance to keep running the way you expect it to. While some maintenance definitely needs to be done by the professionals, there are some things you can do on your own to save some money and get to know your car a little better.

DIY Maintenance Hacks For BMW

  • Understand Your Model: Before starting any work on your car, it’s important to do your homework. Don’t just dive right in — take the time to look over your owner’s manual for any specific requirements or recommended schedules to keep in mind.
  • Oil Changes: Changing the oil in your BMW is one of the most straightforward maintenance tasks you can do yourself. You’ll need a few tools like a wrench, an oil filter wrench, a drain pan, and, of course, the right type and amount of oil and a new oil filter. First, warm up your car to thin the oil (making it easier to drain), then turn off the engine and let it cool slightly. Lift the car using jack stands for safety, locate the oil drain plug and oil filter, and place your drain pan underneath. Unscrew the drain plug and remove the oil filter, letting the old oil drain out. Once drained, replace the drain plug and install a new oil filter. At this point, you can pour in the new oil.
  • Battery Maintenance: To ensure your BMW’s battery has a long life, regularly check and clean the terminals. Corrosion can be cleaned using a solution of baking soda and water. Also, ensure the battery is securely mounted and that the connections are tight. If your car starts to show signs of a weak battery (like slow cranking), it might be time to replace it.
  • Tire Maintenance: Regularly check your tires for wear and tear, and keep them inflated to the recommended pressure. Having the right pressure can improve your fuel efficiency and help your tires last longer. Rotating your tires every 5,000 to 10,000 miles can also help them wear evenly. You can do this at home by jacking up your car and moving the front tires to the back and vice versa, ensuring you keep them on the same side of the vehicle. Remember to tighten the lug nuts securely in a star pattern to ensure even pressure.
  • Checking and Topping Up Fluids: Your BMW’s engine relies on various fluids for smooth operation. Regularly check your engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. If any of these are low, top them up according to your BMW’s specifications. Always use the recommended type of fluid, as using the wrong kind can cause damage.
  • Inspecting Belts and Hoses: Rubber belts and hoses can degrade over time. Inspect these for any signs of wear, such as cracks, brittleness, or leaks. Replacing these is a bit more complex but still manageable. Remember to consult your manual for the proper tension and routing of belts.
  • Spark Plug Maintenance: Replacing spark plugs is a great way to ensure your engine runs smoothly and efficiently. You’ll need a spark plug socket, ratchet, and a gap gauge to ensure they’re set to the correct gap. Unscrew and remove the old spark plugs, check and adjust the gap on the new plugs, and screw them in by hand before tightening them with the socket.

Why You Should Call A Professional

It’s important to be aware that some tasks can be more complex than they appear and require a good understanding of automotive mechanics. Safety is also a major concern — while the professionals have received training and have the right tools to prevent injuries, it’s easy for the DIYer to get in too deep when lifting the vehicle or dealing with electrical parts. When in doubt, stay safe and call the professionals.
