BMWs have a reputation for excellent performance, but without routine tire maintenance it will not perform at its best. When your vehicle’s tires are not properly cared for they can lead to expensive repair services later on.

Your BMW’s tires have an effect on your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and your safety. Damaged tires can cause serious accidents that put you and other driver’s at risk. Below are five tire care tips that will allow you to take better care of your vehicle’s tires.

Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated

One of the most important things you can do is ensure that your vehicle’s tires are properly inflated. Underinflated tires are more likely to cause accidents by reducing your vehicle’s ability to stop effectively and putting your tire at risk of blowing out, which could cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

In addition to being dangerous, an underinflated tire will negatively affect your vehicle’s gas mileage because it doesn’t roll as easily and increased rolling resistance takes more energy to keep the tires rolling, causing poor fuel efficiency.

You should try to check your vehicle’s tire pressure once a week, or at the very least once a month. The air pressure of tires is checked by using a tire gauge, which can be purchased at auto stores or online. For the most accurate reading, check your tire’s air pressure when the tires are cold and haven’t been driven in several hours. To check your tire’s air pressure you should do the following:

  1. Remove the end cap of your tire’s air valve.
  2. Place the gauge on the valve stem and press quickly.
  3. Repeat for multiple readings to ensure a consistent reading and count out any anomalies.
  4. Repeat for all tires.

It is recommended that most BMW models have their air pressure for their tires set at 32 PSI. However, you can check this number by looking at the sticker on the inside edge of the driver’s door or checking the owner’s manual. If your tires are underinflated, you should take your vehicle to a gas station that has a tire air pump, and fill your tires as needed. If your tires are regularly losing air, there may be a leak, and you should take your vehicle into a shop.

Rotate Your Tires As Recommended

The tires of your vehicle will wear differently at different positions on your vehicle. The front tires tend to wear on the outer edges faster, but the rear tires tend to wear more evenly. It is important to rotate your tires regularly to ensure a more even wear on all four tires.

It is recommended that your tires are rotated every 3000-6000 miles or every 6 months, depending on whichever occurs first. Having your tires rotated regularly can save you money by prolonging the lifespan of your tires by thousands of miles.

Keep Your Tires Balanced

Tires can be imbalanced if the distribution of mass within the tire is off, usually caused by tread wear. A sign of tire imbalance is a vibrating steering wheel. Automotive service centers are able to balance your tires, and it can often be done when your tires are rotated. Having your tires balanced allows the tire treads to wear more evenly, ensuring a smoother ride and longer life for the tires.

Check Your Tires Tread and Replace Tires as Needed

The treads of your tire are essential to your vehicle’s ability to stop, especially during wet weather. Due to this important function, you should inspect your tire treads regularly to ensure you replace them when necessary.

Have Your Alignment Inspected Twice a Year

You should have your vehicle’s alignment inspected by an experienced auto service center twice a year because alignment can affect the wear on your tire treads. Misalignment can lead to rapid and uneven wear of the tires, as well as cause other vehicular issues.

Some signs of misalignment include the vehicle pulling or drifting to the left or right and the steering wheel vibrating or shaking. Automotive technicians at a service center can adjust your vehicle’s alignment according to manufacturer specifications, allowing the tires to rest perpendicular on the ground and parallel with each other.
